Twp Toned Heirloom Tulips
Many kinds of heirloom tulips are available. A number of those have two-toned blossom. Here are profiles for some of those.
Gudoshnik Tulip
Godoshrik tulip is a giant Darwin hybrid that dates to the 1950s. The name in Russian means painter or artist. The giant Darwin tulips were introduced by John Scheepers.
This award winning variety does well in zones three through seven. The plant can vary from a foot to 2 1/3 feet in height. Although the very long stems make a great cut flower, experts caution against doing so if you want the plant to return year after year.
Flowering takes place mid season from mid April into May. This heirloom tulip bears showy two toned blooms with no two of them being identical.
The creamy yellow blooms are richly highlighted with red to dark-rose flames along with streaks and splotches. As the blossoms age, the colors deepen. The base is almost black.
Keizerskroon Tulip
Also known as Kaiser crown tulip, this was introduced in 1750 and is considered a classic. It is also known as Grand Duc and emperor’s crown.
This variety was among the earliest of the named tulip cultivars. The award winning plant comes back reliably year after year. It was listed in the 1928 catalog of H.W. Buckbee.
The McClure and Zimmerman bulb catalog describes this as “one of the oldest and the finest tulips.” Keizerskroon tulip is a single early variety that blooms from early to mid season.
The plant is only eight inches to a foot in height. The lightly scented, two toned blossoms are vivid red with yellow edges. Some gardeners consider this tulip to be a little gaudy while others relish the pizazz it lends flower borders and beds.
Cynthia Tulipa clusiana
This is a variety of a species tulip. It is suited to zones three through nine. Unlike some tulips, this requires no cold period in order to bloom. This means that gardeners in warm climates can enjoy this tulip.
Only ¾ to a foot in height, Cynthia tulip blooms in April and is classified as a mid season variety. The two tone, long lasting, feathery blooms are pointed. The color pretty much forms stripes of ruby red on the outside and yellow along the edges. The interior is red and yellow, while the base is purple.
